Having lived in Japan and spent the past two years in Vancouver, I would say I have a fairly healthy obsession with sushi. After all, what is not to love about the perfect combination of well-seasoned rice, the wide variety of fillings, and the umami tone from seaweed all wrapped in one satisfying bite?
sumi. – trendy and relaxed but serious about delivering mouth-watering Japanese food.
sumi. is a new concept restaurant that aims to deliver authentic Japanese cuisine while offering a relaxed atmosphere. Situated in a quiet corner in Pempelfort, the cozy restaurant is converted from a bar with a chilled interior and several patio tables outside on the sidewalk.
PS: If you’re in the area and looking for another amazing restaurant, look no further than Bar Olio, an authentic and delicious Mediterranean restaurant with a Japanese flair (but expect to wait in line). Of course, if you’re still craving sushi, let’s just say Düsseldorf is certainly not lacking in options.
Did someone say Karaage?
How can you possibly go wrong with fried chicken? The Japanese version uses chicken thigh with the skin on (this is what makes it crispy and juicy!!), often marinated with soy, ginger, garlic, and sake. The serving size was generous at sumi. and each piece was succulent, juicy, and full of flavor.
SUSHI, SUSHI AND MORE SUSHI
While sumi. offers a wide variety of dishes from grilled food to tempura, the sushi menu definitely caught my eye and we tried 5 different types of sushi rolls.
The highlight was definitely how fresh everything tasted. It was what good sushi offers, satisfying, fulfilling, yet somehow light enough that you feel like you can eat just one more.
I would especially recommend the dragon roll, with perfectly crispy tempura prawn paired with creamy avocado and a lovely teriyaki sauce to finish.
If you don’t mind giving up that fresh taste, sumi. also offers deep-fried rolls. If you’re looking for authenticity and flavor though, you’re going to like the classic sushi options much better.
A sweet affair
One of the most intriguing parts about sumi’s menu is definitely the generous offering of dessert options. While I was entirely too stuffed to try any desserts when I went, I would be thoroughly tempted to head back and give the house-made mango pudding a go!
Whether you are looking for an izakaya to have a nibble and a drink after work or overindulge in sushi, sumi. can definitely deliver. The restaurant is quite small so a reservation is highly recommended!
