Welcome to The New Kunstpalast: Renovated and Renewed

The Kunstpalast, located in the city center of Düsseldorf, is new and improved! Along with many other curious Düsseldorfers, I visited the new and improved museum during its opening week, which offered complimentary access to some of their exhibits.

The new Kunstpalast is modern and edgy and has something for everyone to enjoy. Alongside its exhibitions and collections, The Kunstpalast hosts courses and workshops, guided tours, activities for children and families, music, and community events.

The museum is fully accessible for wheelchair users as well, and there are wheelchairs available for use during your time at the Kunstpalast.

Have you been to the Kunstpalast before? Even the permanent exhibitions have been revitalized, making it a must-visit to rediscover your favorite works amidst the new and ever-changing exhibitions.

Current Exhibitions (until January 2024)

Death and The Devil – The Fascination with Horror | September 14 – January 21, 2024

Death and The Devil explores the world of horror, from its influence on music videos, films, fashion/culture, and art.

The exhibit is interactive and combines audio and visuals to give you an immersive experience starting with horror influences in the Renaissance era to examining the modern role of horror in society.

There are many public tours available every Thursday at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday at noon.

Tickets can be purchased online or at the box office.

Cornelius Völker – August 31, 2023 – January 7, 2024

Cornelius Völker paints everyday items from books to coffee but explores the intricate and complex ways that they play into our lives.

His work explores temptation, the ephemerality of life, our relationship with our bodies, and, above all else, the examination of time.

I spent a long time walking through his exhibit and could have stayed longer. Völker’s work begs you to examine the role your habits, desires, and love play in your life. His pieces point out the beauty in the mundane. Perhaps, “ordinary” is a construct that we built.

Join a public tour every Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online or at the box office.

Collections

The Kunstpalast has many permanent collections from nearly every artistic medium.

Food and Drink

  • The Creamcheese Room: When finished enjoying the vast exhibitions and collections at the Kunstpalast, head to The Creamcheese Room to enjoy a drink with friends. A piece of art itself, The Creamcheese Room is inspired by 1960s-70s art and is open late in the evenings on the weekend. Opening hours: 19:00-1:00 am
  • Anna Maria Café and Restaurant: If you are anything like my friends and me when you get to the Kunstpalast you may instantly crave coffee and pretzels. Before you start your day (or if you need a break from enjoying the art), head to the Anna Maria Cafe and Restaurant. There are snacks, drinks, lunch, and evening menus as well.
  • You can also check out some other cool areas of The New Kunstpalast like the librarystudy hall, or museum shop

👋 Hey, I’m Jenna!

The voice behind Life in Düsseldorf

I’m a German Canadian who moved to Düsseldorf over a decade ago, and like many of you, I had a million questions when I arrived. From trying to figure out how health insurance works in Germany to wondering where the best bakery is (spoiler: it’s Bülle 🍞), I’ve been through it all.

So I created Life in Düsseldorf to help make your transition smoother — whether you’re moving to Germany, already living here, or just curious about life abroad. My mission? To make you feel a little less overwhelmed and a lot more at home.
